NISM X-A Study Plan for Working Bankers: 28 Days, One Book

It is 9:40 pm. You have closed the branch, finished the day's reconciliation, eaten something quick, and now there is a syllabus on the table that talks about time value of money, derivatives, portfolio theory and a pile of regulations. You have maybe ninety minutes of real attention left. If that sounds familiar, this NISM X-A study plan is written for you.

The Investment Adviser (Level 1) paper looks heavy because it mixes three different kinds of thinking: calculation (TVM, returns, ratios), product knowledge (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, derivatives) and rule-reading (regulations and ethics). Most people who struggle do not lack intelligence. They lack a sequence. They jump between topics, forget the first module by the time they reach the last, and give up in week two.

So this article gives you a sequence. You can follow it with any decent material, but we have built it around one specific tool, the Series X-A Investment Adviser (Level 1) book, because its chapter order and end-of-chapter MCQs make a day-wise plan easy to run.

Why a working banker needs a different plan

A full-time student can read for six hours and fix mistakes the same evening. You cannot. Your study time is fragmented, tired and unpredictable. A month-end, an audit, or a customer escalation can wipe out three days. A good schedule for you must therefore do four things.

  • Use small daily blocks. Sixty to ninety minutes, same time each evening, beats a four-hour Sunday binge you will skip half the time.
  • Put the hardest topic early. Time value of money and debt maths come first, while your motivation is highest.
  • Test immediately. Reading without questions feels productive but fades within days. Attempt MCQs the same day you finish a chapter.
  • Keep buffer days. Plans fail when they have no slack. Ours has a built-in revision phase you can borrow from when life interferes.

One honest note before we start: a book and a plan will not give you exam-hall speed on their own. You need timed practice too, and we will come back to that near the end.

What the paper covers, module by module

Before you schedule anything, see the whole map. The book organises its 24 chapters into four modules, and that structure is also the natural way to break up your study calendar.

What is inside the NISM Series X-A Investment Adviser Level 1 book: 162 pages, 24 chapters, 360 MCQs, 4 modules
What is inside: 162 pages, 24 chapters, 360 MCQs across four modules (2026 edition).

Module A: Financial Planning Foundations (5 chapters)

Personal financial planning basics, time value of money, cash flow management and budgeting, and two chapters on debt management and loans. This is your calculation base. Everything later, from bond pricing to portfolio returns, leans on it.

Module B: Markets and Investment Products (9 chapters)

Indian financial markets, securities market segments, introduction to investments, stocks, fixed income securities (two parts), derivatives, mutual funds, and portfolio managers with an overview of AIFs. As a banker, you will find parts of this familiar. Do not let that make you lazy: the paper tests the details, not the headlines.

Module C: Portfolio Management (4 chapters)

Modern portfolio theory, the portfolio construction process, and two chapters on performance measurement and evaluation. This module is short but concept-dense. Give it focused days rather than squeezing it between others.

Module D: Operations, Regulation and Ethics (6 chapters)

Two chapters on operational aspects of investment management, three on key regulations, and one on ethical issues and the grievance redress mechanism. This is memory work. It rewards repetition, which is why it sits near the end, close to your revision phase.

The NISM X-A book runs to 162 pages in the 2026 edition, with 360 practice questions, which averages about 15 per chapter. That average is what makes the table below so simple to follow.

The 28-day NISM X-A study plan, day by day

Here is the schedule. Each study day has two parts: read one chapter (or part of one) in the first 45 to 60 minutes, then attempt that chapter's MCQs in the last 20 to 30 minutes. Mark the questions you got wrong. You will revisit only those later.

NISM X-A study plan: day-wise reading and MCQ targets
DaysWhat to readMCQs to attempt
1 to 4Module A: planning basics, time value of money, cash flow and budgeting, debt and loans (Parts 1 and 2)75 (about 15 per chapter)
5 to 12Module B: markets, market segments, investments, stocks, fixed income (Parts 1 and 2), derivatives, mutual funds, portfolio managers and AIFs135 (about 15 per chapter)
13 to 16Module C: modern portfolio theory, construction process, performance measurement (Parts 1 and 2)60 (about 15 per chapter)
17 to 22Module D: operational aspects (Parts 1 and 2), key regulations (Parts 1 to 3), ethics and grievance redress90 (about 15 per chapter)
23 to 24Case studies: work through the scenario-based setsCase-study questions
25 to 28Revision: your marked mistakes, then mega testsMega-test questions

The chapter MCQs add up to 360 across days 1 to 22 (75 + 135 + 60 + 90). Module B is given eight days for nine chapters because Fixed Income (Part 1) and Part 2 are best read on the same evening or on back-to-back evenings, and two lighter chapters can share a day. Adjust to your own pace, but keep the module order.

How to run a single evening

  • First 10 minutes: skim the chapter headings and any worked examples before reading properly.
  • Next 40 to 50 minutes: read actively. Write one line per sub-topic in your own words. For calculation chapters, redo every worked example with a pen.
  • Last 20 to 30 minutes: close the book and attempt the 15 MCQs. Do not peek.
  • Last 5 minutes: tick the wrong ones. Write the correct reasoning next to each in a single line.

That is about ninety minutes. On heavy branch days, do only the reading or only the MCQs, but never skip both on the same day. A broken chain is harder to restart than a short session.

Using the book inside this NISM X-A study plan

A plan is only as good as the material behind it. Here is how the book's structure maps to the schedule above.

Four-step NISM X-A study plan: Modules A and B, Module C, Module D, then case studies and mega tests
The plan in four steps: foundations and products, portfolio theory, regulation, then cases and mega tests.

Chapter order does the planning for you

Because the chapters already run from planning basics to products to portfolios to regulation, you never have to decide what to study next. That removes a surprising amount of friction on tired evenings. You open the book where the bookmark is and begin.

About fifteen MCQs a chapter is a sweet spot

Fifteen questions take roughly twenty to thirty minutes if you think properly. That fits inside a working evening. More would push you past your limit, and fewer would not show you where your gaps are. If you score below 10 out of 15 on a chapter, read the weak sections again the next evening before moving on.

Case studies and mega tests

The product also lists 30 case studies (120 questions) and 5 mega tests (500 questions). Case studies train you to apply concepts to a client scenario, which is exactly how an adviser exam thinks. Mega tests are for the final phase, when you want to practise stamina. Use them on days 23 to 28, not earlier, or you will burn through them before you know the material.

You can browse the wider range of certification books on the store, and try a few free mock tests for the timed practice a book cannot give you.

Common mistakes that wreck a 28-day schedule

  • Skipping Module A because it feels basic. Time value of money errors will cost you marks in bonds, mutual funds and portfolio performance too.
  • Memorising regulations in week one. They fade. Read Module D late, then revise it in the last four days.
  • Never writing down wrong answers. Your mistakes are your personalised syllabus. Keep a half-page list and review it on days 25 to 28.
  • Studying only on weekends. Two long days a week mean five days of forgetting. Short daily blocks win.
  • Waiting to feel ready. You will never feel ready. Book the exam slot once you finish Module B, so the deadline is real.

If you only have two weeks, or if you have six

Twenty-eight days is a middle path. If your exam is closer, keep the module order and double your daily load: two chapters per evening, MCQs at the end of each. It is demanding, and you will need protected time. If you have six weeks, spread the same plan over longer, add a full rest day each week, and use the extra time to repeat the chapters where you scored lowest.

In both cases, keep the last stretch for case studies and mega tests. Resist the urge to start them early. Also, always confirm eligibility, scheduling and the latest requirements on the official site at www.iibf.org.in for the upcoming exam cycle. This article does not quote dates or fees because they change.

Free resources to pair with the book

You do not have to spend anything to start. The store has free study PDFs and a growing blog for banking and certification topics. Use them for revision notes on days you only have twenty minutes. The book is there when you want a single, structured spine for the whole paper, with the chapters, MCQs and extras in one place.

As for price, the NISM X-A study material is listed at ₹700 against an MRP of ₹2,398. Prices can change, so treat the book page as the current source. There is also a free sample you can read before deciding, which is the sensible way to check whether the writing style suits you.

Your first three evenings

Do not try to start perfectly. Just commit to three evenings. Evening one: introduction to personal financial planning plus its 15 MCQs. Evening two: time value of money, slowly, with every example redone by hand. Evening three: cash flow management and budgeting, plus its MCQs. After three evenings you will know whether the pace works, and you will already be ahead of everyone who is still planning to begin.

Tired is normal. Showing up for ninety minutes anyway is what clears this paper. Pick tonight's chapter, set an alarm for tomorrow's slot, and begin your NISM X-A study plan today.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really finish the NISM X-A syllabus in 28 days while working full time?

It is realistic if you can protect sixty to ninety minutes most evenings. The plan reads one chapter a day with 15 MCQs, then keeps the last four days for case studies and revision. If your branch workload is heavy, stretch it to six weeks rather than skipping the MCQs.

Should I read the whole book first and then attempt questions?

No. Attempt each chapter's MCQs the same day you read it. Questions expose gaps while the material is fresh, and that is when fixing them costs the least time.

Is a book enough, or do I need mock tests as well?

A book gives you the content and chapter-wise practice. Exam-hall speed comes from timed tests, so add a few full-length mocks in the last week. The mega tests listed with the book and the free tests on the store can both serve this purpose.

Where do I check the exam schedule and requirements?

Always use the official website, www.iibf.org.in, for the upcoming exam cycle. Dates, fees and rules change, so do not rely on any third-party article, including this one.

Prefer revising from a printed book?

Chapter-wise books with MCQs after every chapter — minimal pages, complete coverage, delivered anywhere in India. Every book has a free sample to read first.
