Inside the IIBF IT Security Book: Modules, Chapters and Practice

It is 10 pm. You have closed the branch, answered the last call from the regional office, and reached home with a head full of other people's problems. Now you want to start on a certificate paper whose syllabus mentions firewalls, business continuity, IS audit and incident response. Where do you even begin?

This article is a guided tour of the IIBF IT Security book, written for people in exactly that situation. Even if you never buy it, you will leave with a way to break the subject into pieces and a method to study it in the little time a banking job leaves you. Then we will open the book and show you what is on each page.

Why IT Security feels harder than it is

Most bank employees meet IT security as a set of rules: change your password, do not share the OTP, do not plug in unknown pen drives. The certificate asks for more. It wants you to understand why those rules exist, which controls sit behind them, what the threats look like, and what the regulator expects from an Indian bank.

The trouble is not difficulty. It is scatter. The topics jump from physical locks to malware to audit trails, and without a map you keep wondering whether you are studying the right thing. A good first step, whichever material you use, is to group the topics into four buckets:

  • Overview: what information security is, how an organisation governs it, and which standards it follows.
  • Controls: the safeguards for assets, premises, software and networks.
  • Threats: what can go wrong, and how a bank recovers when it does.
  • Audit and compliance: how systems are checked and what the regulator requires.

Once you can name those four buckets from memory, every new chapter has an obvious home. That alone removes much of the fear.

How the IIBF IT Security book is organised

The IIBF IT Security book follows the same four-bucket logic. It runs to 135 pages and 20 chapters, split into four modules. Here is the map.

Module A: IT Security Overview (8 chapters)

This is the foundation. It covers Introduction to Information Security, Corporate IT Security, Organisational Security and Risk Management, Security Governance, Physical and Environmental Security, Hardware Security, Software and Operational Security, and Security Standards and Best Practices. If you are short of time, this module teaches you the vocabulary that the other three modules assume.

Module B: IT Security Controls (5 chapters)

Here the book moves from ideas to safeguards: Asset Classification and Controls, Physical and Environmental Security Controls, Software Security Controls, Network Controls, and Controls in Software Development and Maintenance. Think of this module as the answer to the question "what does the bank actually do about it?"

Module C: IT Security Threats (5 chapters)

This module covers IT Security Threats, Software Attacks (Virus and Malwares), Incident Management, Fault Tolerant System, and Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Management. It is the most story-like part of the syllabus, and many candidates find it the easiest to remember because the examples feel real.

Module D: IS Audit and Regulatory Compliance (2 chapters)

The shortest module has two chapters, Information Systems Audit and Regulatory Mechanism in Indian Banks. Short does not mean skippable. Audit and regulation are where a banker's day job meets the syllabus, so read these two chapters twice.

What's inside the IT Security book: 135 pages, 20 chapters, 299 questions across 4 modules
What is inside: 135 pages, 20 chapters and 299 questions, organised into four modules.

What one chapter looks like

A syllabus list tells you what is covered, but not how it feels to study. Here is the shape of a single chapter in the IIBF IT Security book, so you can picture a typical evening with it:

  1. Concise notes. The chapter explains the topic in plain, compact language. The aim is to be readable at the end of a long day, not to impress.
  2. Key points. The essentials are pulled out so that you can revise the chapter in a few minutes before an exam.
  3. MCQs. Each chapter closes with questions, so you test yourself while the material is fresh. Across the book there are 299 questions.

This note-points-questions rhythm matters more than it seems. Reading alone gives a comforting feeling of progress, but it fades. Answering a handful of questions immediately after reading shows you, within minutes, what has actually stuck.

A practical tip: do not read the questions after the chapter and then peek at the answers straight away. Attempt them cold, mark the ones you guessed, and return to the notes only for those. Guessed-right answers are the most dangerous ones, because they feel like knowledge.

The extras: case studies and mega tests

Beyond the 20 chapters, the book carries two extras:

  • 40 Case Studies with 160 questions. Case-style questions ask you to apply a concept to a short scenario, which is closer to how a branch or head-office problem actually arrives.
  • 5 Mega Tests with 500 questions. These mix topics from all modules, so you practise recalling a topic without knowing which chapter it came from.

Chapter MCQs check whether you understood a topic. Mega tests check whether you can still retrieve it a fortnight later. Both are needed, and most people skip the second kind until it is too late.

A four-step plan for using the book

Here is a simple method you can follow with the IIBF IT Security book, or adapt to any material you already own. It assumes you have only an hour or so on most weekdays and a longer stretch on weekends.

Four-step plan for using the IT Security book
Four steps: skim the modules, read a chapter, attempt its MCQs, finish with case studies.

Step 1: Skim all four modules in one sitting

Before reading anything in depth, flip through the four modules and the chapter titles. Spend 30 to 40 minutes only on headings and key points. You are building the map, not memorising.

Step 2: One chapter per sitting

Pick one chapter and finish it fully, notes and key points, in a single session. Half-read chapters are forgotten faster than unread ones. Start with Module A so the vocabulary is ready, then take B, C and D.

Step 3: Attempt that chapter's MCQs the same day

Do the questions while the reading is fresh. Note your wrong and guessed answers in a small notebook. By the end of the book, that notebook is your personal revision sheet, and it is far more valuable than any highlighted page.

Step 4: Case studies, then mega tests

When all four modules are done, work through the 40 case studies in batches, and then attempt the 5 mega tests one at a time with a timer. Do not attempt them all in the final week. Spread them out so you can learn from each result.

Sample weekly rhythm with the IIBF IT Security book (adjust to your own shifts)
DayTimeTask
Mon to Thu45 to 60 minutesOne chapter plus its MCQs
Friday30 minutesRe-read the notebook of wrong answers
Saturday2 hoursCase studies or a mega test
SundayRest or light revisionKey points of the week's chapters

At four chapters a week, the 20 chapters take about five weeks, leaving time for the case studies and mega tests before the upcoming exam cycle. Check the official schedule at the IIBF website and work backwards from your exam date.

What to pair with the book

Let us be honest about limits. A book, however well organised, will not give you exam-hall speed on its own. For that you need timed practice. The free mock tests at iibf.store/tests are a good place to build that habit, and the free PDFs at iibf.store/free-material are useful for quick revision before a mock.

Also keep an eye on regulatory topics. Rules and circulars change, and the book is a 2026 edition, so always cross-check anything regulatory against the latest official sources. If you want more study guidance, the iibf.store blog has plans for other papers as well.

Who gets the most out of this book

The IIBF IT Security book suits you best if:

  • You are a working banker who prefers a printed, compact book you can carry and annotate over scrolling through scattered notes.
  • You are new to technology topics and want the subject broken into four clear modules.
  • You learn by testing yourself, and want 299 chapter questions, 40 case studies and 5 mega tests in one place.
  • You have a limited number of weeks and need a fixed sequence to follow.

It is less useful if you already work in IT security daily and only need a quick regulatory refresher, in which case a few chapters from Module D and the mock tests may be enough.

The IIBF IT Security book is priced at ₹825 against an MRP of ₹2,398. Prices can change, so the book page always shows the current figure, and the free sample there lets you judge the writing before you decide. You can also browse the other titles at iibf.store/books.

The takeaway

IT security looks scattered only until you see it as four modules: overview, controls, threats, and audit with compliance. Study one chapter per sitting, test yourself immediately, record your mistakes, and save the case studies and mega tests for the later weeks. Whether you use the IIBF IT Security book or your own notes, that method will carry you further than late-night rereading ever will.

Frequently asked questions

How many chapters and questions does the book have?

It has 135 pages and 20 chapters in four modules, with 299 questions across the chapters. It also includes 40 case studies (160 questions) and 5 mega tests (500 questions).

Can I read the modules in any order?

You can, but starting with Module A is sensible because it builds the vocabulary used in the rest of the book. Modules B, C and D can then be taken in sequence.

Is a sample available before I buy?

Yes. The book page has a free sample so you can check the style of notes and questions first. Prices may change, so confirm the current price on the page.

Is the book enough on its own?

It gives you structured notes and a lot of practice, but exam-hall speed comes from timed mocks. Pair it with the free tests and check the official IIBF site for the latest schedule and syllabus.

Prefer revising from a printed book?

Chapter-wise books with MCQs after every chapter — minimal pages, complete coverage, delivered anywhere in India. Every book has a free sample to read first.
